Teriparatide is a synthetic form of human parathyroid hormone, which helps to regulate calcium metabolism. This injection helps to build new bone by increasing bone strength and bone mass density and reduces the risk of fractures by stimulating bone formation in the management and treatment of osteoporosis.
Teriparatide injection is available as prefilled liquid injection doses and administered subcutaneously under the skin, in the thigh or lower abdomen regions.
It is taken as a single dose per day, not to be exceeded in dose.
After the first few doses, patients may feel dizzy or experience an increase in heartbeat, without panic one should either sit or lie down immediately.
Teriparatide injection may cause certain side effects like Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, sweating, loss of energy, muscle pain, sleeplessness, irregular heartbeats, shortness of breath, low haemoglobin, low blood pressure, etc.
Chest pain, difficulty in breathing, painful lumps, or sores on the skin are to be considered serious and need to consult the doctor.
Store in a refrigerator (2°C to 8°C).Do not freeze.
Always keep children and pets away from this medication.
Protect it from light.
Use within the expiry period and discard after the prescribed period as mentioned on the leaflet.
Do not use this medicine if the contents are altered and found different coloured or if any particles are present.
Drink and eat plenty of foods and drinks that are rich in calcium and vitamin D, as they help in making bones stronger avoiding further danger of osteoporosis ensuring proper absorption and retention of calcium.
Supplements may also be recommended if required.
Women who are post-menopausal age should cut back on their salt intake as it increases their chance of losing more bone minerals.
Engage in regular exercises like weight-bearing activities for proper maintenance of bone health.
Pregnant or breastfeeding women need to discuss this with the doctor before the use of this injection.
Avoid consuming alcohol along with the Teriparatide injection.
Do not take Teriparatide injections for longer durations unless prescribed by the doctor.
Teriparatide may cause dizziness, fatigue, and blurring of vision; hence do not drive or operate heavy machinery if you feel drowsy.
Teriparatide is not meant to be administered in children and patients below 18 years.
Teriparatide is not recommended for individuals with a history of skeletal malignancies or bone metastases.
